The annual Earth Hour falls this year on my birthday, 27th March. for one hour between 20.30 and 21.30 everyone is supposed to switch off unnecessary lights. This year the International Dark Skies Association has put its weight behind this rather minimal exercise that was started by WWF.

The BBC published the following article on 10 December 2009. It picks up on all the main points we have been talking about over the last couple of years. It is very unfortunate that they did not do this last year when it would have helped our debate with the European parliament over the legisltion. We have not been idle on this issue in the last 12 months and I hope to have some useful research to post here in the near future which indicates that many countries with non fossil fuel dependent electricity generation will be increasing their carbon footprint by mandating a change to CFLi “Energy Saving”Lamps. I am afraid there has not been much activity on this site so far this year. My time has been occupied spreading the sustainability message through conferences specifically in Goa, India and Stockholm, lighting Days. I have also been struggling with how to present my talks on-line, posting the slides alone is not a great deal of help and my first attempt at videoing a presentation was really not good enough to post due to sound issues.
To the main topic of this post, following on from the discussions in Berlin it is my aim to define a Sustainability Agenda for PLDA in the next year. This will happen in a number of meetings such a the discussion held in Berlin. The next meeting will be in Frankfurt on the 11th April between 14:00 and 17:00. In order for these meeting s to be effective there are strictly limited places available on a first come first served basis. If you wish to be involved in the debate please email Inga Hogrebe at PLDA Head office <Inga Hogrebe <ihogrebe@pld-a.org>> as soon as possible
Thanks
Kevan Shaw, Director of Sustainability for PLDA
