While we have been tackling the big stories of the banning incandescent lamps the EU has been busy producing regulations covering lamps used in commercial situations. Consultation on European Legislation

There is currently a discussion paper on Possible Measures for Targeting the Energy Efficiency of Lighting in the Tertiary Sector open for consultation until mid September. We have looked at this and CELMA ( the European Association of Light Fitting Manufacturer’s Associations) have also shared comments with us. In principle we are proposing to agree to lighting legislation based on system efficiency measures that will require incorporation in the lighting designer’s work flow. UK Building Regs Consultation

The UK Department for Local Governments and Communities have a consultation open on the future of the England and Wales Building regulations here. It is open to the end of August and this is our limited chance to influence this important legislation. We need to get away from lamp and luminaire efficiency and start working with system wide measures such as the LENI as set out in BS/EN 15193. I will provide a formal response from PLDA but we need a lot of people to email them asking for the same thing to get any action.

Here is an article written by Neil Knowles of Elektra Lighting for Mondo magazine in July 2008. He is looking at the light levels we are designing to and asks if these are too high.
