In a surprising turn up DEFRA in the UK provided the following press release. It seems that they have been asked by the EU to provide further technical information to clarify, or rather criticise the output from the EU’s paid consultant VITO. These reports makes more sense than a lot of the VITO report and these first two documents are apparently the beginning of a series of documents on this issue. Doyen of Lighting Designers Howard Brandston has spent the early part of this year beavering away in his garage undertaking some fundamental research into another area of concern around the Compact Fluorescent ballast Integrated “Energy Saver” lamps. His focus is on the Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) created by these. Following a ruling in Iceland Osram are no longer allowed to describe Compact Fluorescent Ballast integrated lamps as environmentally friendly and are no longer allowed to say that an 11watt CFLi is the equivalent of a 60W incandescent lamp in their advertising in Iceland!
